Record low Rhine water levels disrupt river traffic and cruise operations
The Rhine reached a new record low water level of 6.1 metres at Lobith on Sunday, September 27th, falling below the previous record of 6.12 metres recorded in August. Rhine discharge has fallen below 600 cubic metres per second for the first time since records began. Dutch water authorities have introduced restrictions on river traffic, including a one-way system on the IJssel between Arnhem and Zutphen. River cruise operators have cancelled sailings or shortened itineraries as sections of the Rhine have become impassable.
